Why gold prices are at record highs
  + stars: | 2024-04-09 | by ( John Towfighi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Central banks see gold as a long-term store of value and a safe haven during times of economic and international turmoil. When interest rates fall, gold prices tend to rise, as bullion becomes more appealing than income-paying assets like bonds. Investors also regard gold as a hedge against inflation, betting bullion will retain its value when prices rise. The People’s Bank of China bought gold for the 17th straight month in March, adding 160,000 ounces to bring reserves to 72.74 million troy ounces of gold, according to Reuters. Higher oil prices are likely to stoke concerns over inflation, boosting gold prices, according to the UBS research note.

“China is now simply too large for the rest of the world to absorb this enormous capacity,” Yellen told reporters Monday. US intelligence has warned that China is providing technology and equipment to Russia that is important to Moscow’s war in Ukraine. During her last visit to Beijing, Yellen dramatically boosted business for a Yunnan restaurant chain and its mushroom dish after her delegation was spotted dining there. “As a US official, Yellen needs to know more about China than just its food. Only by understanding China better, can she correct the US worldview and its views of China and China-US relations.”

New York CNN —A team of five US Treasury Department officials is traveling to Beijing this week for a series of meetings on the economy with their counterparts in China, a Treasury official told CNN on Monday. The trip by senior officials comes ahead of a planned return to China by Treasury secretary Janet Yellen later in 2024. Specifically, the Treasury delegation plans to raise China’s use of non-market economic practices and industrial overcapacity, the official said. The visit marks the first time that the economic working group is meeting in Beijing since it was launched last September after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s trip to China. However, there is nothing to suggest the latest US-China meeting is in direct response to the renewed concerns about China’s economy and financial markets.

The White House on Wednesday took the wraps off its proposal for screening investments U.S.-based funds make abroad, giving President Joe Biden a new tool for “de-risking” from China. But while the government’s inbound-investment reviews have often proven onerous, the pitch for outbound screening should placate investors and even diplomats. If recipients boast close ties to Chinese military or intelligence capabilities, the department could then block the transaction. Follow @BenWinck on TwitterCONTEXT NEWSU.S. President Joe Biden on Aug. 9 issued an executive order that tasks the Treasury Department with forming an outbound investment screening program. In response to the executive order the Treasury Department issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking comment on the program.

Extreme weatherHeat waves, wildfires, floods and storms have been hitting regions across North America, Europe and Asia. Air travel woesUS passenger airline employment is now at its highest level in over two decades, says a new statement from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as carriers build up their workforces to meet the huge demand for post-pandemic travel. However, passengers this summer are still facing “unacceptable delays and disruptions” because of a shortage of air traffic controllers in North America. If all this has got you wistful for a bygone “golden age of air travel,” however, you’d be very wrong.

Ms. Yellen used softer language for America’s economic strategy toward China, disavowing a term that had caught on in Washington but offended Beijing. Yet even though more talks are a likely outcome of Ms. Yellen’s trip to China, neither she nor Chinese officials retreated from their policy positions. She forged ties with China’s economic leaders. The officials — including Ms. Yellen’s counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng — generally have less international experience than their predecessors and are less familiar to policymakers in the West. One of Ms. Yellen’s top goals was to meet China’s new team.

Janet Yellen’s Blurred Lines on Bank Depositors

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday walked back her comments from the day before that walked back her remarks the day before about providing a de facto guarantee on all U.S. bank deposits. The Administration’s mixed signals are becoming another threat to the financial system. The essence of financial stability is market confidence, which requires clear, consistent rules. But Ms. Yellen is muddling the rules and the Administration’s message. On Tuesday she said protecting uninsured depositors over $250,000 could “be warranted if smaller institutions suffer deposit runs that pose the risk of contagion.”
